Concert to benefit the hungry, Oct. 28 Share
Beecher music students are preparing for their annual ''Concert for the Hungry'' on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. at Beecher High School. In it's eighth year, the annual concert benefits local food pantries by collecting food donations in lieu of a monetary admission price. The idea for the concert came about years ago at a high school band officers' meeting. It was decided then that the music department would organize a benefit concert every year for the needy, scheduled especially when there would be the most impact - the Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday Season. Admission to attend the concert is at least one non-perishable food item per person, though families often bring in much more. This year, area pantries have indicated that they also are looking for donations of toilet paper, personal hygiene products such as shampoo and conditioner, soap, or deodorant, and household cleaning products. These items will be accepted at the concert. Participating in this year's concert are the seventh and eighth grade band, the seventh and eighth grade chorus, the high school chorus, and the high school concert band.

''I think it is awesome that students get together to provide for others,'' says Faith Anema of the high school chorus. Fellow chorus member Amanda DeYoung adds, ''I like the Concert for the Hungry because it really brings the community together.'' This year organizers held a student poster contest to promote the concert. All entries will be featured at various locations around the village. Finalists' entries will be displayed at local businesses for public voting. Winners of the contest will be announced at the concert. Russell Publications prints several community newspapers each week, serving Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.
