Tornadoes Tear Through Will County
» Web Exclusive - 9 June 2008

The Monee Fire Protection District was stricken by a tornado that was on the ground for a few miles.

Several homes and dozens of out buildings were damaged. The tornado also took down the high-tension wires and towers along I-57 and Stuenkle road.

With wires across I-57, officials were prompted to close the interstate in both directions. There was a motor vehicle crash that involved tractor-trailers and a van. Five people were treated and transported by MFPD to St. James Olympia Fields.

The MFPD activated the EOC and forward command posts, completed a District property damage and hazard assessment.

The Fire Chief called for a Helicopter to get a better visual scope of the extent of the damage.

Mutual aid Fire and Ambulance crews were called for and assisted with the increased incident call volume.

The damage and hazard assessment was continuously reassessed and the plan updated as needed.

The MFPD called for the Green Garden and Monee Township highway department along with the Village of Monee Public works to clear the roadways and driveways of debris so that emergency crews could access the stricken areas. These agencies worked very hard and the MFPD is very appreciative of their assistance.

The MFPD worked with the Will county EMA and the Will County Sheriff along with the Red Cross and other agencies.

The MFPD provided drinking water to the residents in the areas with no municipal water system and provided water for the live stock and horses.
