Mama Africa Troupe to perform at Crete Library Share
To celebrate National African American History Month, the Crete Public Library will present a special performance by Mama Africa and the Mafric Drumming and Dance Ensemble on Saturday, February 6, at 1 p.m. The program is appropriate for all ages and everyone is encouraged to attend. Mama Africa, also known as Elizabeth ''Lizzy'' Hammond-Apea, was born in Ghana and has been performing as a cultural dancer, drummer, actress, composer, singer, and choreographer since she joined the Soul Cultural troupe in 1967. She has traveled around the world and won several awards for her work. Currently a resident of Park Forest, Lizzy's career objective is to continue to share her artistic and choreographic talent by teaching and performing as an ambassador of goodwill all over the world. She will bring several talented drummers and dancers to the Crete Public Library to perform some of their works in honor of African American History Month. For more information about the program or performers, or to register, call the library at 708-672-8017. Crete Public Library is at 1177 N. Main St., Crete.
