Manteno's Deery wins JV I-8 title Share
Manteno sophomore Mark Deery did not start wrestling until his freshman year, but you would not be able to tell that with the way he has been wrestling so far this year for the Panthers. Deery, who had been filling in for injured state qualifier Anthony Franc, has been very impressive in his second year of wrestling for the Panther wrestling team. Deery won his second tournament of the year last Saturday winning the 140-pound I-8 conference championship in impressive fashion. Deery entered the tournament as the fourth seed. He won his first match in the quarterfinals by a major decision over his Lisle opponent. Next, in the semi-final round, Deery faced the top seed from Wilmington, who was a returning starter from Wilmington's state championship team from last year. Deery controlled the match and punched his ticket to the finals with a pin in the third period while leading 9-7. In the finals, Deery faced the second seed from conference favorite Sandwich. Deery would not be denied his championship as he won a decisive 12-6 decision to win the title. Coach Cory Blanchette was very pleased with Mark's performance.
