Plans are underway at Manteno High School for an exciting program that will allow students to explore future careers while still in school.

Through the MHS Job Shadowing Program, students will be able to observe workers on the job and see the skills that are desired in today's work force.

Students will have the opportunity to speak first hand with employees in the field the student is interested in pursuing.

Students will also participate in some pre-observation experiences in the classroom in order to determine the field they are interested in and to learn a few things about the occupation prior to the day of the job shadow experience. There will also be follow-up activities to allow the student to reflect on their shadowing experience.

To provide a variety of opportunities for these young adults, the program needs several area businesses to provide short-term, on-site experiences for students. This will give students an inside look at what happens on the job.

For example, a student might visit a business to observe a worker for a three or four hour period one morning or for an entire day.

Students will accompany an employee through part of a "typical" day and learn about the varied aspects of their occupation and the skills required to work in the business or industry they are observing. Students will then be able to explore what they need to do to apply themselves to reach their career goals.

The shawoing program already has a number of businesses that have agreed to participate. More such cooperators are needed. Scheduling would fit the needs of the businesses and would not interfere with the conduct of business.

Anyone interested in providing such an experience may contact Kelli Wadley at Manteno High School by phone at 815-928-7135 or via email at kwadley@manteno5.org.
