Murder/robbery shocks Steger community  Share
The normal quietness of the Village of Steger was broken Tuesday evening at approximately 7:40 p.m. by a murder and robbery. Hair Trends Hair Salon, at 3121 Chicago Road, became the site of the first murder in Steger in several years. Two male Hispanic offenders entered the salon with handguns and announced a robbery. The two sons of the owner were in the shop; one behind the cash register and one sitting in a chair. The shop's owner was not present at the time. They took less that $100 in cash and ripped the telephones out of the wall. Daniel Moreno, 23 years old, was sitting in a chair and the offenders took his cell phone from him, and then shot him in the head execution style. Mr. Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene. The offenders wore gray hooded sweatshirts, with bandanas over their face. They escaped in a dark colored minivan with a loud exhaust system. Two employees locked themselves in a back room and were not harmed.
The salon has been in business for a long time and was recently purchased by the victim's mother. Hair Trends Beauty Salon sits at the rear of its lot away from the street. Police Chief Richard Stultz and Trustee Ken Peterson held a press conference at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to update the media. The press conference was attended by print media and TV Stations CBS-2, WGN-9 and WLS-7. Police are investigating , but have no suspects yet. Cornell Hudson is a reporter for Russell Publications.
