Village Officials Asked to Sit with Audience
» Cornell Hudson - Steger News - November 27, 2008

Residents and visitors at the November 17 Steger Village Board meeting were treated to a pleasant surprise. At the end of the meeting, trustees adjourned to the audience and were replaced by students from Columbia Central Middle School.

With so much political activity lately, it was refreshing to see students participating in and practicing what they have been studying.

The student mayor, village clerk and trustees debated the question "should Steger garbage collection be recycled at the curb?"

This garbage issue is not only timely, but real and very important.

After much debating between the student officials, along with some audience participation; they voted against recycling. Their discussions covered issues like costs, work involved and resident opinions.

This was a wonderful demonstration of Columbia Central and its student activities. When it was all said and done, Mayor Sherman mentioned that the garbage that is picked up in Steger is recycled by the village's two scavenger companies at their facilities.

A leaf collection vacuum was purchased from E and J Equipment for $31, 920. This will replace the previous labor intensive process where public works employee collect bags of leaves in pick up trucks. They would then make several trips, split the bags and dump them. Superintendent of Public Works Bill Cox acknowledges that vacuuming and mulching at the curb is more efficient and less costly.

Two 1992 dump trucks with snow plows and salt spreaders were declared surplus and put out for bids for a minimum of $10,500 each. A 1999 Ford Crown Victoria used by code enforcement is also put out for bids. All three vehicles can be viewed at the village parking lot. Two new dump trucks were delivered November 10.

Steger Cub Scouts were honored for collecting food for Christmas baskets.

Steger's Farmers Market Manager Barb Dorman, who also writes for Russell Publications, is holding a Winter Craft Show on December 13 at Fire Station #1 (across from village hall parking lot).

The Scrementi Development letter of credit and the Steger Road (34th Street) parking ban were tabled until the next meeting.

Steger Police received 56 calls involving juveniles in October. Fourteen of those calls came from schools. The police are to be commended for utilizing alternative methods to reduce the number of juveniles being sent to court and being treated as adults.

This involves more work for police, but the payoff is keeping youth out of the system and in school. There were 1,890 calls for the month, of which 61 resulted in arrests and 375 tickets were issued.

A resolution was passed supporting the Illinois Department of Transportation in proclaiming December, 2008 as National Drunk and Drugged Driver Prevention Month.
